I'm so excited to introduce you all to the newest members of our family.
Hubby and I have been talking about getting chickens for a while now so when one of our neighbors showed up at the door to inform us that they were giving away their chickens we jumped on the offer.
Hubby and I have been talking about getting chickens for a while now so when one of our neighbors showed up at the door to inform us that they were giving away their chickens we jumped on the offer.
The kids were ecstatic and spent the entire first day following them around the chicken coop.
I am amazed at how friendly they are. They will eat right out of our hand and don't mind the girls petting them or even picking them up. And the girls love going on an "egg hunt" before breakfast each morning. Here is our collection from our first day.
There are 6 chickens total. (4 different breeds but don't ask me what they are. Hubby is the chicken expert, to me they are just chickens.) We have not named them yet. Hubby thinks its silly to name chickens. However, that is not going to stop me from naming them. Do you/Would you name your chickens?

Oh, I want chickens so bad! I'm trying to convince my hubby into it. Are they hard to maintain? What did you do for their coop?
ReplyDeleteWe've had chickens for right at 14 years. When my children were younger, all our chickens had names. At one point we had right at 60 of them, now we have 36. The kids had all kinds of names. Talk about turning them into pets, just start naming them. Oh, I can't tell you how many funerals we had to have when something has happened to them. The cross and all! It's easy to get attached to them.
ReplyDeleteOne thing be certain to watch out for, is that chickens love to peck at anything shiny, like eyes. Be sure to warn your children of this so that they don't put the chickens right up to their faces. Not trying to worry you just something to be aware of.
Have fun with your new chickens.
Thanks for the advice.
DeleteAw, so cute! I say you should name your chickens if you're only using them for eggs.
ReplyDeleteWe have chickens, too, and I LOVE them! We have 13 ladies, all layers, 4 different breeds. I also just ordered a dozen meat birds, which is new for me. I'm nervous about it, I'll not lie to you. We'll see! Good luck to you with yours!
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely name the chickens. I think any pet/animal you have in or around your house deserves a name. Heck, I named the lizard that has made his home with his family on my back patio..his name is Leopold.
ReplyDeleteDon't ask my hubby to name them! He'd say breakfast, lunch & dinner. I say Hannah, Mable & Jasmine
ReplyDeleteI think my hubby would agree with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lol.
DeleteYes...name them. We have a brooding flock and laying flock. The brooders all have names. There are 6 of them. The layers do not have names because they all look alike (they are Rhode Island Reds). We have 2 banty roosters with the brooders (banty's) and 6 roosters with our 50 red hens. All 8 banty chickens look different, so they have names. We call the red hens "the ladies" and the 6 red roosters we call "Big Joe"
ReplyDeleteWe have 10 hens and 3 kids 10, 4, & 9 months, and a huge 150+ pound Tortoise named spike. All of our hens have names. My oldest received an incubator for Christmas last year and hatched a few of them herself. The hens and the tortoise live well together. Just today the tortoise flipped over on his back and all of the hens were cackling so loud that I went outside to yell at them and saw spike upside down. As soon as he was righted all was quiet again. So it is safe to say that they are all friends. Our hens are pets but there organic eggs are sold weekly to regular customers that pays for there feed and the remainder goes into my eldest child's bank account for future school field trips. They are great pets and the kids love them.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! I had a chicken named Henna back in the day!
ReplyDeleteI think the only reason not to name them is if you plan on eating them eventually! :/ I'd love to have my own chickens, but with 7 dogs I don't think they would last long.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby just recently came home with a rooster...totally without warning!! My 13 year old son immediately named him Quintablo ! Don't ask me where he came up with that name!!!
