I've even us...The wooden spoon trick DOES work. I've even used bamboo skewers in a pinch. You have to understand you still cannot over-fill your pot. It's meant to catch the froth the starch causes that often boils over and burns to your pot/stove. If you use too much water in too small a pot and add pasta it will overflow.
